Hours: 77.5 hours per pay period
Pay Range: $58.40-$75.80 per hour

Job Overview

A leading healthcare organization is seeking a Lead Lactation Consultant to support and advance its Mother-Baby and postpartum lactation program.

Working under the direction of nursing leadership, the Lead Lactation Consultant will collaborate with other lactation professionals to provide direct patient care and education while helping oversee key department initiatives. Responsibilities include staff education, the Human Donor Milk program, Baby-Friendly designation requirements, quality improvement, and collection and analysis of infant-feeding data.

This position is ideal for an experienced RN and IBCLC who combines strong clinical lactation expertise with program coordination, education, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Lactation Consultants to provide comprehensive breastfeeding and lactation support to mothers and newborns
  • Provide direct lactation assessment, education, and intervention to mother-baby dyads
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate lactation orientation and education programs for nurses, physicians, providers, and other clinical staff
  • Assess and support staff competency related to lactation care and documentation
  • Organize prenatal and postpartum patient education classes
  • Coordinate outpatient lactation education and resources
  • Oversee Human Donor Milk processes and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures
  • Lead initiatives related to maintaining Baby-Friendly designation
  • Collaborate with physicians, administrators, nurses, and other stakeholders on Baby-Friendly standards and initiatives
  • Collect, analyze, and communicate data related to infant feeding practices and clinical outcomes
  • Identify trends and opportunities for improving breastfeeding and lactation services
  • Serve as a clinical resource for hospital staff, physicians, patients, and families regarding lactation concerns
  • Provide direct patient care as a Registered Nurse when needed
  • Apply sound clinical judgment and prioritize patient-care and department needs appropriately
  • Participate in performance-improvement and quality initiatives
  • Promote patient rights, informed decision-making, and family-centered care
  • Maintain infection-prevention and patient-safety standards
  • Complete required competencies and continuing education
  • Maintain required CERP education to support ongoing IBCLC certification
  • Attend and present at staff meetings, mandatory education, and departmental in-services
  • Support responsible utilization of department resources
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse license
  • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification through IBLCE
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification upon hire
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification within 180 days of hire
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification within 180 days of hire
  • One to three years of relevant nursing and/or lactation experience
  • Strong knowledge of current nursing, lactation, maternal-newborn, and patient-care practices
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to educate and support patients, families, and clinical staff
  • Strong organizational and program-coordination skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with nursing leadership, physicians, administrators, and interdisciplinary teams
Preferred
  • Previous lead, coordinator, or program-management experience in lactation services
  • Previous Mother-Baby, postpartum, Labor and Delivery, NICU, or women's health nursing experience
  • Hospital-based lactation consulting experience
  • Experience managing or supporting a Human Donor Milk program
  • Experience with Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative requirements and designation processes
  • Experience developing staff education and competency programs
  • Experience collecting and analyzing breastfeeding or infant-feeding quality data
