Job Title: Lactation Consultant
Location: White Plains, New York
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Schedule: Night Shift | Variable Nights | 7:00 PM–7:15 AM
Pay Range: $58.40–$75.80 per hour

Job Overview

A leading healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Lactation Consultant / Registered Nurse to support its Mother-Baby and postpartum services on the night shift.

The Lactation Consultant will provide direct lactation support to mothers and newborns, assess feeding needs, develop individualized care plans, and educate patients and families throughout the prenatal, inpatient, and outpatient continuum. This position also serves as a clinical resource for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding breastfeeding and lactation concerns.

The ideal candidate will be a BSN-prepared Registered Nurse with an active New York State RN license and current IBCLC certification .

Responsibilities

• Provide direct lactation assessment, education, and support to mother-baby dyads
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized lactation care plans
• Assist patients with breastfeeding techniques, positioning, latch, milk supply concerns, and other lactation challenges
• Provide prenatal and postpartum education to patients and families
• Facilitate patient education classes and connect families with outpatient lactation resources
• Serve as a clinical resource for nurses, physicians, and other hospital staff regarding lactation concerns
• Develop and provide lactation orientation and ongoing education for nursing and physician staff
• Assess staff competency and support appropriate lactation documentation practices
• Maintain compliance with Human Donor Milk policies, documentation, and regulatory requirements
• Participate in data collection and education related to Baby-Friendly designation and quality initiatives
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, administrators, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
• Provide direct patient care as a Registered Nurse when needed
• Recognize and prioritize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions
• Incorporate patient rights, informed decision-making, and individualized care into daily practice
• Maintain infection-prevention and patient-safety standards
• Participate in performance-improvement and quality initiatives
• Complete required competency assessments and continuing education
• Maintain required CERP education to support ongoing IBCLC certification
• Attend mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and department education
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
• Perform other related responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Current New York State Registered Nurse license
• Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification through IBLCE
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification within 180 days of hire
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification within 180 days of hire
• Strong knowledge of breastfeeding, lactation management, maternal-newborn nursing, and current clinical practices
• Strong maternal and newborn assessment skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Sound clinical judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
• Ability to respond quickly to changing patient and department needs
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work variable 12-hour night shifts

Preferred

• Previous Mother-Baby, postpartum, Labor and Delivery, NICU, or women's health nursing experience
• Previous hospital-based lactation consulting experience
• Experience providing breastfeeding education in both inpatient and outpatient settings
• Experience supporting Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative standards
• Experience working with donor human milk programs
• Previous experience educating or training clinical staff

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move throughout the patient-care environment for the majority of the shift
• Ability to remain standing or stationary for extended periods
• Ability to move or transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
• Ability to assist with patient mobility using appropriate assistance or equipment
• Ability to respond to emergency alarms, clinical changes, and rapidly changing situations
• Ability to operate computers and other clinical equipment throughout the shift
